Edge makes history at WWE Royal Rumble

Matty Paddock

WWE star Edge made history by returning in stunning style to win the men's Royal Rumble match.

The Canadian veteran made his comeback in the main event of Sunday's show, and won the landmark match, earning himself a championship bout at WrestleMania in the process.

In doing so, he became the first WWE Hall of Famer to ever win the famed Rumble match - entering first, he was in the ring for a total of 58 minutes.

It understandably marked a memorable night for the 47-year-old, with the action marking his first in-ring appearance since undergoing surgery for a torn triceps just seven months ago.

While that's a miraculous enough a recovery, it's even more impressive in the context of it being just Edge's second high-profile match since last year's Royal Rumble.

At that event he shocked the world by making WWE comeback some nine years after being told he'd have to retire as a result of ongoing neck issues.

Back then he was forced to surrender his world championship - his latest victory providing the perfect storyline ending for his fairytale story.

To complete the ultimate comeback, he'll need to either down WWE Champion Drew McIntyre, who retained against Goldberg at the Rumble, or Roman Reigns, who remains Universal Champion after seeing off Kevin Owens.

Sunday's Rumble also saw the hugely impressive Bianca Belair win the women's Royal Rumble match.

The 31-year-old fan favourite also pulled in an hour-long shift to punch her own ticket to WrestleMania in the process.

WrestleMania is WWE's biggest show of the year, and airs this year on April 10 and 11.
