SmackDown Results 12/3/21: Daniel Bryan sends a message

Matty Paddock

The seemingly never-ending road to Wrestlemania continued to twist and turn on Smackdown this week.

With the biggest event of the year still the better part of a month away, little seems crystal clear, with the exception of the facts that Edge will challenge for the Universal title and Sasha Banks will defend against Bianca Belair.

Yet WWE continued to try and spin the plates of mystery on Smackdown by throwing as much into the mix of both of those stories as possible. Edge continues to tussle verbally and physically with Daniel Bryan as they both keep their eyes on Roman Reigns, while Banks and Belair again ran the routine of failing to get along as a team.

Edge and Bryan opened up the show with yet another war of words ahead of the latter's contract signing with Reigns for their match at Fastlane - the winner of which meets Edge at WrestleMania.

As if to just keep things interesting, The Rated R Superstar inserted himself into the signing at the end of the night, eventually all but landing himself the role of special enforcer for the Fastlane match, meaning the trio will continue to clash for a few weeks yet. He’ll need to beat Uso in a match next week to cement the role, but that much appears academic.

As it was, after the signing itself descended - as ever - into chaos, Bryan showed some of his steel by leaving Edge laying with a running knee, giving all of those involved some food for thought.

Banks and Belair have seemingly done nothing but talk in recent weeks and, via an edition of The Kevin Owens Show, they again had chance to verbally state their case. They ended up teaming with each other once again to battle common foes Tamina and Natalya, coming unstuck thanks to even more repetition, Reginald - keen to ingratiate himself to Banks and Nia Jax - once more involved as he caused the distraction that eventually saw Belair pinned, much to Banks' fury.

Intercontinental Champion Big E returned on Smackdown but was faced with a familiar scene - being laid out by impending challenger Apollo. The champ had thrown down an open challenge for his gold which, eventually, was answered by Sami Zayn. Big E won the match with the Big Ending before being blindsided.

Seth Rollins continues to have big problems with Cesaro. Despite saying he was done with the Swiss Cyborg, Rollins’ true intentions were revealed after he crashed a match between Cesaro and Murphy to attack his foe. He had looked set to take things to a sinister level after clamping a chair around his head before being stopped by officials - Shinsuke Nakamura then on hand to stare him down as he made his way backstage.

The last few weeks of Smackdown have seen The Mysterios battle Otis and Gable and The Street Profits tangle with Dolph Zigger and Robert Roode. For originality, the heels and faces were clubbed together on opposing sides for one giant tag team match that saw ‘good’ prevail, Montez Ford nailing Roode with an impressive frog splash.
