WWE teased a future confrontation between Universal Champion Roman Reigns and Cesaro on SmackDown.
The Swiss Superman is riding high in WWE just now after an epic performance and victory over Seth Rollins at WrestleMania last weekend.
While it’s not necessarily set in stone that Cesaro will be the next challenger to Reigns’ gold, the two did stand face to face at the start of Friday night’s episode.
Reigns had appeared to sing the praises of his own dominant display at WrestleMania, only to be interrupted by the man who’d downed Rollins so impressively at the biggest show of the year.
They stared each other down and Cesaro had a longing look at the title before the Head of the Table withdrew. Clearly irked by his presence and a later request for a match against him, Reigns insisted Cesaro face Jey Uso in the night’s main event instead.
Any doubt that the former member of The Bar might be next in line to challenge Reigns was raised by the fact that Rollins is clearly far from finished with him – he blindsided Cesaro during the match with Uso to leave plenty up in the air as the show drew to a close.
Another rivalry clearly far from over following a WrestleMania clash is that between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. The two had another bout on this week’s SmackDown – Zayn fleeing the scene before being pursued by his rival who yet again left him laying with a Stunner.
There was cause for celebration as new Women’s Champion Bianca Belair and The Street Profits gathered to revel in her momentous WrestleMania victory over Sasha Banks, though while the newly-crowned Belair was keen to share the credit for the moment with Banks, the Boss was less than impressed, brooding backstage.
The Street Profits’ night didn’t get much better from there, either – they went straight into a tag team title match against Dolph Ziggler and Bobby Roode but were once again unsuccessful in their quest to snare the championships.
Elsewhere, Natalya’s win over Shayna Baszler kept her and partner Tamina in the women’s tag title picture, while Rey Mysterio scored himself a win over Otis.
