SmackDown Results 19/3/21: Zayn turns on Owens, Edge battles Uso

Matty Paddock

Edge rubber stamped his place as enforcer for Sunday's Universal Championship match after a win over Jey Uso on Smackdown.

The Hall of Famer overcame Roman Reigns' cousin in the main event to ensure it is he who will oversee the Fastlane clash between Reigns and Daniel Bryan. The winner of that clash of course then goes on to challenge Reigns for his title at WrestleMania, but at this stage it looks every bit as likely that both challengers will somehow be involved.

Edge's win came at a cost given Regins rather predictably attacked him after the bell, on a night which saw the champ trade yet more words with Bryan as they build towards Sunday's encounter.

One match that has been confirmed as added to the card for Fastlane following Smackdown is Shinsuke Nakamura against Seth Rollins. Rollins yet again came out and gave a lengthy speech about the ungratefulness of Cesaro, only for Nakamura to seemingly step up in defence of his former tag team partner, eventually nailing him with a Kinshasa.

Among the storylines that seems stuck on repeat in recent weeks is that of the Smackdown tag team division. Rey and Dominik Mysterio along with Chad Gable and Otis have been pushing for a title match over the past couple of months and, after an impressive win for the former over the Street Profits with champions Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode at ringside on commentary, we again had yet another meeting between the Mysterios and Gable and Otis. Gable and Otis duly put them away once more thanks to a huge splash from the big man, giving the champs food for thought to say the least.

Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens appear to be on track for another feud after recent weeks of teasing that turned into something far more blatant this week. Pleading with Owens to come round to his way of thinking and join his documentary, Zayn was left furious following a defeat to King Korbin and ultimately look his frustrations out on Owens who had been watching at ringside.

Smackdown Women's Champion Sasha Banks successfully defended her title in the first match of the night. She defeated Nia Jax, albeit with an uninentional assist from Jax's partner, Shayna Baszler. Attempts by Baszler to redeem herself by getting a match against Bianca Belair later in the night served the team no better - Natalya and Tamina attacking them both as they go in pursuit of the Women's tag team titles.

The bitter rivalry over the Intercontinental title also continued. After weeks of being on the wrong end of attacks by challenger Apollo Crews, Champ Big E gained at least a small measure of revenge by attacking the Nigerian royalty backstage after a heated exchange on a double interview.

Albeit a little rushed, the final card for Sunday's Fastlane has finally come together in the last week as focus now starts to turn sharply toward WrestleMania.

Fastlane airs on WWE Network and BT Sport Box Office in the UK from 11pm Sunday. Visit wwe.com for more.
